Hello to long days spent outside in the wonderful sunshine. Most of my friends think of Colorado as a winter vacation spot to hit the slopes, but Colorado is the place to be in the summer.
My family and I enjoy the numerous playgrounds, hiking trails, and unique parks Colorado has to offer. And, let's not forget the time spent pool side. As wonderful as all this is, the sun exposure can take a toll on your locks.
Sunlight can cause your hair color to fade. You definitely want to be aware of your hair's sun exposure if you are a brunette or have lowlights in your hair. The sun can cause your color to fade showing off those unwanted orange and red tones.
Here are a few things I like to do in the summer to keep my hair looking great. I make sure I am using a hair care line such as Unite because almost all of Unite's products have UV and thermal protection for your hair.
I also like to have a bottle of Unite's Blonda shampoo. Blonda is a purple shampoo that helps to get rid of unwanted tones. Most people think only blondes benefit from a purple shampoo. However, Unite's Blonda works wonders on brunettes who have been exposed to a lot of sun. If you are feeling a bit brassy, try shampooing your hair once a week with this amazing shampoo. It will help reduce the look of brassiness in your hair. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.
I also like to buy a new hat each summer to cover up my hair. Have fun with your hat, and find something that will pair well with your summer outfits and bathing suit. When you are at the pool, a hat is always a great idea, and it will also help protect your face from getting too much sun. Who wants to speed up the process of those fine lines?
Hair is very porous and likes to absorb as much moisture as it can. Be aware that it is not good for your hair to lay on skin covered with sunscreen. If your hair is long enough to sit on your upper back, make sure it is not soaking up the sunscreen you have on your back. It can cause unwanted discoloration to your hair. Tie your hair up in a bun or style it in a way that gets it off your skin.
I like to think of my pool or beach times as a time for my hair to have a break. Before you head to the water, dampen your hair and apply a nice moisturizing conditioner to leave in your hair. Gently pull your hair back into a ponytail and then wrap it in a bun. If you are planning to go into a pool, I highly recommend wetting down your hair in the shower and spraying your hair with a product such as Unite's 7 Seconds Leave In Detangler. Your hair can only absorb so much moisture. I would prefer it to absorb water and leave in conditioner rather than absorbing the chlorine in the pool.
When you are finished swimming, use a gentle clarifying shampoo such as Unite's Weekender to remove any chlorine that may have gotten into your hair. You should follow this cleanse with the shampoo and conditioner you use daily to then nourish your hair.
At the end of the summer, I recommend doing a Malibu Swimmers treatment to rid your children's hair of any chlorine. If you are consistent with Unite's Weekender, this treatment may not even be necessary. I keep some in stock for the mermaids and mermen around me.
